FAQ

  1. MORE ABOUT MAIL.BE
    • How does Mail.be pay its bills ?

To make money, our team sells private label versions of its software to universities, ISP's and large companies all over the world.

If you love Mail.be, upgrade to a paying plan so we can use your money to support projects and organisations that fight for civil freedom on the web.
    • Can Mail.be protect my data from the law ?

Mail.be is based in Belgium because privacy laws are very strict, but we are not above them. If a judge issues a court order, we are legally obligated to comply. Any other authority will of course be unable to access our servers or data. However, should you wish to engage in illegal activities, we strongly suggest you read our Terms Of Use thoroughly and think twice before you sign up.
    • Can Mail.be protect my mail from a virus ?

Mail.be is not anti-virus software! Yes, all emails sent or received by Mail.be are virus and spam free, but if you have a virus on your computer, we can't properly protect the local files on your machine, nor any of the other tools you use. Hackers could use such a weakness to obtain the login and password of your account on Mail.be. So, please install a working virus scan and get regular updates!

    • What happens with my account when I don't use it ?

Who in the world wouldn't want to use our services? Okay, maybe you were stranded on an island and had to survive without Internet for a year. In that case you should know that we do not keep accounts indefinitely and actually believe that your data should disappear if you stop using your account. Free accounts are therefore suspended after 210 days of inactivity and totally deleted 150 days later. Paying accounts are never deleted as long as they are paid.

  4. CAN I GET COOL STUFF ON MAIL.BE?
    • Can I add a logo or customize my Mail.be account ?

Not yet, but we want one with the batsignal for ourselves so we're definitely working hard on that. We'll keep you posted.
    • Can I have my own domain name in my mail ?

Want a mail address that doesn't end with an ‘@Mail.be' domain construction? No problem. You can have your own domain name directly on our servers - they'll even become your official mail servers
    • How can I get my own domain name in my mail ?

We don't sell domain names, if that's what you want to know, so if you don't already have one, get it with the following companies: GoDaddy or Register. Then, register for a paying subscription with Mail.be and you can impress the world with your awesome domain name.
    • What happens when I use Mail.be as my domain server ?

It's very simple: all mails sent to any address of your domain name arrive on our servers. If you already have a mail server for your domain name, be sure to follow the procedure correctly to avoid the loss of messages. We're sad to admit it's not possible to transfer only certain selected addresses to Mail.be. It's all or nothing.
    • I have a domain name, but no server yet. What now ?

      1. Modify the MX records.
You need to modify (or ask the company you registered your domain name with to modify) the "MX records" (MX = Mail Exchangers) of your domain name as follows:

      yourname.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = smtp1.mail.be.
      yourname.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = smtp2.mail.be.

Yes, both entries are important - they guarantee a good load balance and fail over.

Yes, the "." at the end of both lines is crucial too. Without it the MX records are faulty.

      2. Wait.
The propagation of the DNS needs some time (from a few hours to a few days), so you might have to wait for at least 24h before the propagation is effective.

      3. Contact us.
When the propagation is effective, please send us an email with your domain name as well as your login and chosen email address. If several addresses have to be created, send us the list of addresses with their corresponding logins. Since a Mail.be account can only be linked to one e-mail address, be sure to create several accounts if necessary.
